Study groups are classes without teachers where no one direct students to study a particular subject. Schools and colleges instruct students to form study groups. These study groups may be a bunch of students from the same class or even students from different classes together. But a question will linger in the minds of students who have yet to form study groups. There are both advantages and disadvantages of study groups that give rise to problems.
Advantages: A study group will help you keep track of the time and be accountable of how much you have studied. People have the tendency to perform much better if other people are counting on you to come on time and study for the entire period set aside for the study group. What every you already know can be tested in a study group. In a group there are multiple students who pick of different sections of the class. In a study group all the students can exchange what they have picked up in the class and help the ones who missed essential parts. And while other are explaining something to you, you will get a better idea of what you are studying. You can also pick up their understanding of the same from others. Another important part of study groups is their tendency to make study fun. You will begin to have fun while studying.
Disadvantages: Study groups have the tendency to turn into gossip sessions. This will cause the time to fly by without even accomplishing a part of what you intended to do. No one can stop small talk from picking up, but these small talks need to be stopped at all costs so that you do not waste the time of others in the Study group. Other problems arise when study group mates do not make it on time or depend too much on others for class work.
